Distress Crayons vs Crayola Slick Stix ....

Postby Kathyk » Tue May 24, 2016 8:25 pm

Hi peeps,

Hoping to start a debate here so any input is valued. Ranger have introduced Distress Crayons which (if you are unfamiliar) are like soft wax crayons, for grown ups!!! Currently available in 18 colours, to co-ordinate with the existing distress range, broken down in to sets of six, neutrals, pastels and brights.

Crayola Slick Stix have been around for some time, are half the price of Distress Crayons and do "pretty much" the same sort of thing IMHO - though I'm open to persuasion on that one! Only difference is that they are sold in packs of five or twelve and only in more primary/basic colours though they include black/white/silver and gold

Has anyone used them? Like them/loathe them? Got any tips?

Some people have also likened them to gelatos but (frankly) I've never really taken to gelatos so would love to hear from someone who's tried all of them.

So far, I've discovered:-

Deeper colours may be achieved when used on a non gesso'd card surface, HOWEVER, blending is WAY easier when used on a pre gesso'd surface.

Crayola Slick Stix take longer to dry so wait a bit longer BEFORE stamping.

If knocking back colour with a stencil/baby wipe then Slick Stix, because they stay wet longer, can be totally removed if not careful OR you perhaps need a dryer baby wipe.

ANYONE ELSE?

Well! I wish I could help here. This is the first time I have heard of either product. I have used gelatos - I don't mind them and don't use them nearly as often as I should (isn't that the same with all of our stash???).

I will be interested to hear what others have to say!

See what fab backgrounds you can make with them, a moistened finger and/or a baby wipe and some stencils!

Of course, this very morning, Amazon have sent me an e-mail regarding Maped Colour'peps smoothies as an alternative and they are even cheaper than Crayola Slick Stix .. at £7.39 for 12 so, I've just got to try them and see how they compare!

Watch this space!
